Adult Swim announced its Toonami Rewind programming block will be ending this year and will not return in 2025. Toonami on Saturday nights is unaffected by the change, however.
“We just wanted to say thank you to everyone who watched Toonami Rewind, and let you know that it will be retiring at the end of the year,” Adult Swim said on its Toonami Facebook account. “But Saturday night Toonami isn’t going anywhere. Stay Gold.”
Toonami Rewind made its debut earlier this year on May 31 at 5:00 p.m. local time. The programming block harkened back to the early years of Toonami with anime like Dragon Ball Z Kai, Naruto, and Sailor Moon. It also featured a recreated HD version of the classic Toonami packaging. The block aired every week on Fridays at the same time slot until 7:00 p.m. local time.
Previously, Dragon Ball Z Kai ran on Toonami this past March with a special marathon that honored the legacy of the late Akira Toriyama. These episodes aired back-to-back after Ninja Kamui at that time. The marathon was very successful, prompting Dragon Ball Z Kai’s return with Toonami Rewind.
The ongoing Dragon Ball Daima series is the last major anime work that Toriyama was involved in before his untimely passing. Goku, Vegeta, Supreme Kai, and the rest of the iconic crew are turned into children, prompting them to embark on a new adventure in the Demon Realm. New episodes release on Fridays on Crunchyroll and Netflix with English subs, and English dubs would follow in staggered releases.
