The Nintendo Switch has outsold the PlayStation 2 in the US to become the second best-selling console of all time in the country, according to market results provided by Circana executive director Mat Piscatella.
According to Piscatella, Nintendo Switch is now sitting at 46.6 million units sold life-to-date on the US. The console is the second best-selling in the country behind only the Nintendo DS, with the PlayStation 2 now sitting in third place.
According to Nintendo’s previous earnings release for the quarter ending on September 30, 2024, revealing that the Nintendo Switch sales reached 146.04 million worldwide. 2.62 million Nintendo Switch hardware units were moved in the second quarter of fiscal year ending in March 2025.
Additionally, 39.64 million software units were sold on Nintendo Switch in the same quarter. This brings the grand total of Nintendo Switch software units sold to 1.306 billion. Updated sales figures will come on February 4, 2025 with the nine months earnings release.
Over 127 million players play on Nintendo Switch each year, and 34 million of these players are Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Moreover, the number of registered Nintendo Accounts has increased to 366 million units.
A Nintendo Switch successor is currently in the works at the company, and a reveal is coming within the fiscal year. The console will be backwards compatibility with Nintendo Switch games and support Nintendo Switch Online.
