Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Once Considered a DLC Episode on PC

Finishing the third game in the series is of higher priority.

Epic Games has recently conducted an interview with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi talking about the recent announcement of the PC version launching on January 23rd, 2025, and the desire for a DLC episode.

In this interview, Hamaguchi mentions how him and his team spent a lot of energy finding the right scope for Rebirth’s ambitious new structure, and how the pressure was on, seeing as Final Fantasy VII was *the* title that shot the Final Fantasy series to worldwide superstardom, and also helped popularize the entire console RPG genre. Needless to say, remaking such a tittle means having to satisfy both long-time fans, but also newcomers who potentially weren’t even born when the original released.

However, Hamaguchi admitted to one interesting thing during the interview. While he had the desire to add an episodic story as a new DLC for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC, he had ultimately decided that due to the team’s limited resources, finishing the third and final game as quickly as possible was the “highest priority.” He did of course, say that if the team happens to receive strong requests from players after the release of the PC version regarding certain matters, they might consider it.

Final Fantasy VII Remake did get an episode DLC in the form of Episode INTERmission. It was short adventure featuring Yuffie, providing much-needed insight on her character for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Perhaps this means that we’ll see some sort of Rebirth INTERmission? Time will tell, I suppose.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available now for PS5 and PS5 Pro. Be sure to check out our 5/5 review of the game, where we stated, “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a generational RPG that exemplifies everything there is to love about the medium.”
