With the reveal of the Okami sequel and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom confirmed that the company will be focused on “re-activating dormant IPs” that haven’t had a new game in recent years. This means that even more fan-favorite series from Capcom, such as Viewitful Joe, could potentially make a comeback with new games at some point.
“In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” Capcom’s press release reads. “The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above, in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”
The new Okami sequel is being co-developed by multiple studios with staff that were involved with the original game, including M-TWO, Machine Head Works, and Hideki Kamiya’s new studio, CLOVERS. Kamiya is directing the Okami sequel, which entered production around the time of The Game Awards 2024. Platforms and a release date were not announced.
Capcom also announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first brand-new Onimusha title in more than a decade. The game is planned for a 2026 worldwide release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period. In this time of relative peace for Japan, Malice has befallen the ancient city. Twisted into an eerie and unsettling place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma.
