Today marked the final video on the Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games channel. Best known as the Father of Kirby and creator of Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai created this channel in an attempt to teach viewers about the different aspects of game development. In this final episode, he shared that a total of 90 million yen of his own money was used to finance the channel, with hopes that this will be a resource for the world.
Additionally, it was revealed that Masahiro Sakurai is working on a new title right now. Sakurai stated that he received a request to write a game proposal in July 2021. He shared that “assuming we’re able to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later.”
First, it’s most likely that this game is the next Super Smash Bros. title. Nintendo launched Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch at the end of 2018, marking 21 months since the release of the console. If the next-generation console follows suit, we could be looking at a new Smash Bros. game in either 2025 or 2026. This would roughly align with the schedule that Sakurai has given, as a game of this caliber would take years to plan out and develop.
Additionally, there’s also the chance that this could be a new Kid Icarus title. Masahiro Sakurai served as the Director for Kid Icarus Uprising, and it is still one of the most beloved 3DS titles to this day. A new game in the series could be a great fit for the launch year of Nintendo Switch 2, offering players a unique experience not present on Switch.
