Masahiro Sakurai is Ending Production for His YouTube Channel

A final schedule episode and a special finale episode to come.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai announced that the final scheduled episode for his YouTube channel, Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, will release on Tuesday, October 15. A special finale episode is releasing sometime afterward, marking the end of production for his YouTube channel.

In January 2024, Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that he was “wrapping up” his YouTube channel. He’s still committed to creating and developing new games in the future, however. His work on Super Smash Bros Ultimate ended with the release of the Kingdom Hearts Sora amiibo on February 16, 2024.

If Sakurai is working on a new game, it will likely release on the Nintendo Switch successor. A reveal for the new console will happen within the current fiscal year, according to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa. This means that the reveal will happen before the end of March 2025.

Over 33 million copies of Super Smash Bros Ultimate by the end of 2023, and multiple new Spirit events have been held in 2024 thus far. The latest Super Smash Bros game also received an update (version 13.0.2) on February 14, adding support for the new Sora amiibo that launched two days later. The release of this amiibo meant all base roster and DLC fighters were made into amiibo, completing the game’s post launch support cycle.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released on December 8, 2018, for Nintendo Switch. Two Fighter’s Pass expansions were released, adding a total of twelve new fighters to the game. The game’s roster is dream-like, with characters like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Joker from Persona 5, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and many more. Over one hundred stages and one thousand music tracks are featured in the game alongside its 89 fighters.
