Nintendo announced an agreement with Embracer Group to fully acquire Miami-based studio Shiver Entertainment. This studio previously worked on porting major third-party titles to Nintendo Switch, including Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1. Shiver Entertainment will continue to port and develop software for Nintendo Switch, including third-party games for the console’s successor.
“Shiver is a video game development company that develops software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch,” said Nintendo in the press release. “Since its establishment in 2012, Shiver has partnered with publishers and developers through commissions for large scale title developments, and recently, has worked on porting and developing software titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1.”
Nintendo continued, “Nintendo will acquire 100% of the outstanding shares of Shiver and make it a wholly owned subsidiary. By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and accomplished development team, Nintendo aims to secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles. Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch. The Acquisition will be completed pending satisfaction of all relevant customary closing conditions.”
Previously, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the Nintendo Switch successor will be revealed within the current fiscal year.
“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
The successor to the Nintendo Switch is expected to launch sometime in early 2025. Recent rumors indicate that the console may utilize a magnetic Joy-Con system, as well as a 1080p screen for portable play. The console will also support physical media, ensuring that physical games will be present for the platform.
In addition, a Nintendo Direct will be held sometime in June 2024. This Nintendo Direct will focus on new Nintendo Switch games launching in the remainder of 2024. Nintendo will not share news about the Nintendo Switch successor in this Nintendo Direct.
