Volition Games Is Shutting Down As a Result of Embracer’s Restructuring

    A sad day.

Volition Games has announced that, effective immediately, the studio is shutting down as a result of the Embracer Group’s restructuring program. This is sad news, coming off of the Saint’s Row reboot that was released worldwide last year. Said title is also joining the PlayStation Plus lineup for September.

    Volition Games Closing Its Doors

Volition was acquired by THQ in August 2000. It remained there and was sold to Plaion when THQ went bankrupt. As many recall, Deep Silver (Plaion) was acquired by Embracer Group in 2018. Last November, Volition began working under Gearbox, a branch of the Embracer Group. The studio announced this news at 11 AM CT, right alongside the Starfield embargo. You can read the team’s statement about the closure below:

“The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We’ve been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight.

This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.

To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.

The team has a history of over 30 years crafting the Saint’s Row series and other titles like Summoner. Additional titles include the Red Faction series and the Descent series.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated if there are ways to support the former employees of Volition Games.
