Microsoft has officially announced that the Xbox 360 Marketplace will shut down after nearly two decades of service on July 29, 2024. They accidentally leaked the announcement earlier this year when a post suggested that the store would shut down on July 29, 2024. Further, Microsoft has confirmed that the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function after July 2024.
Microsoft initially released the Xbox 360 in November 2005. 2023 will mark the consoles’ eighteenth anniversary. Alongside the announcement, Microsoft confirmed more specific details relating to the end of the 360’s digital store.
Xbox 360 Marketplace Shutting Down
In an official blog post,
- On July 29, 2024, Xbox will stop supporting the ability to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace (marketplace.xbox.com)
- Related to this change, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360, which means TV and movie content will no longer be viewable on your Xbox 360 after July 29, 2024.
Players can still purchase and view movies on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. However, you will no longer be able to buy anything new. The news marks a momentous occasion in the industry. That said, unlike when the Wii U and 3DS eShop services were taken offline earlier this year, most of the games on the 360 will still be available on other hardware. Microsoft will likely reveal more information on the end of the Xbox 360’s marketplace soon.
