Spike Chunsoft announced a free update for roguelike dungeon RPG Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island featuring new dungeons, a Dojo Challenge, and much more. More free content is also planned in a future update.
Also known as Shiren the Wanderer 6: Toguro Island Expedition Record, the latest entry in the series already surpassed well over 200,000 copies sold in Japan. This makes it the fastest-selling game in the Shiren the Wanderer series in Japan. Released on February 27 in the west, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island became a standout title in 2024 for its addictive gameplay and enticing features.
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Free Update (April 29)
A free update for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island featuring new Sacred Tree Dungeons, a new Dojo Challenge mode, an expanded storehouse, and additional balance adjustments and improvements.
Firstly, the Sacred Tree may be accessed from the starting town of Shukuba Beach. This location holds holds difficult dungeons with special rules. Select from different modes for a more challenging adventure.
The following modes are available in Sacred Tree dungeons:
Normal Trial: Replay the dungeons of the main game with the same rules while also being able to change your playable character. For dungeons that had a boss battle at the end, you can now challenge them again.
Time Trial: Race to the finish and strive to complete the dungeon in as little time as possible.
Turn Trial: Master efficiency by completing the dungeon in as few turns as possible.
Countdown Trial: Aim to complete the dungeon with a time limit on every turn and the dungeon as a whole.
Challenge Trial: Set your own personal restrictions to truly challenge yourself, such as completing the dungeon without using certain items or collapsing.
Spike Chunsoft notes that a “mysterious sixth mode” is also available in the Sacred Tree. While undergoing these trials, players may also select Kokatsu Shiren as a playable character. In this form, Kokatsu and Shiren combine to become a powerful character with special new skills. The form is available after clearing the Cavern of Suiryu dungeon.
Moreover, the Dojo Challenge Mode has been added to the Monster Dojo. Players may complete mini-stages that lets them learn the attributes of each monster. This mode is unlocked after clearing Serpentcoil Island in the main story.
The capacity of the Item Holder Storehouse has expanded 180 items to 960 items with the latest update. Balance adjustments and other improvements were made as well.

A second free update for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is currently in development. Spike Chunsoft is targeting a summer 2024 release date for the update. This update will contain more new content and feature improvements.
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is now available in the Nintendo eShop for $59.99. Moreover, physical copies are available now at participating retailers. First-run copies include 2.75” x 3” sticker featuring the protagonist Shiren and the game’s traditional Japanese art style.
