Sega Sammy released its financial results for fiscal year ending in March 2023, revealing sales data for its key franchises including Persona and Sonic the Hedgehog. This past fiscal year, Sonic Frontiers was SEGA’s top performing title, and sales are expected to growth with new updates.
Sonic Frontiers Surpasses Three Million Copies Sold
Sonic Frontiers surpassed a total of 3.2 million copies sold as of the end of March 2023. The latest sales update includes physical shipments and digital copies sold worldwide. Additionally, SEGA confirms the Sonic the Hedgehog series reached approximately 8.15 million copies sold from April 2022 to March 2023. A majority of the sales during the fiscal year came during the third quarter, which saw the release of the latest Sonic title in November 8, 2022.
The Sonic the Hedgehog series sold 1.46 million copies in the first quarter of the fiscal year. SEGA’s prolific franchise would sell a total of 2.63 million copies by the end of the second quarter. Sonic Frontiers released in the third quarter, which saw total annual sales for the franchise soar up to 6.75 million copies sold. Another 1.4 million copies were sold in the fourth quarter for a total of 8.15 million copies sold.
SEGA credits the Sonic franchise’s growth in movies, animation, and collaborations as part of its success in the gaming part. Further, multi-platform support and a global simultaneous launch attributed to the company’s success during the fiscal year. Fans may look forward to more Sonic Frontiers content in the form of two new updates during the fiscal year ending in March 2024.
Currently, the Knuckles TV series is currently in production at SEGA and Paramount Pictures. Idris Elba reprises his role as Knuckles from the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. He’s joined by several actors reprising their roles from the movie including Adam Pally as Wade Whipple and Tika Sumpter as Maddie.
Lastly, Sonic Frontiers is available now for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam worldwide.
