Switch reportedly outsells lifetime PS4 sales in the US

UPDATE – Switch also surpasses lifetime Nintendo 3DS sales within Japan, read up on full details here.

Ahead of Nintendo’s earnings release on May 10th, we have a potential early glimpse into current Switch sales in the US. According to VGChartz, the Switch reportedly outsold the lifetime PS4 sales in the US just 5 years following launch on March 3rd, 2017.

Switch lifetime units sold in the US reportedly stand at 35.62 million, roughly 370,000 units more than the PS4. PS4 lifetime sales sit at 35.25 million in the country. The gap will grow considering the dwindling interest in PS4 as the PS5 generation continues on.

Switch continues to dominate in US NPD hardware sales while the PS5 continues to sell under the effect of shortages. The Xbox Series X|S recently came in #1 for dollar sales in US NPD results for the month of March 2022.

Nintendo recently lowered their sales forecast for Switch units sold worldwide in fiscal year 2023 from 23 million units to 20 million units. Production is affected by ongoing shortages. However, many analysts in Japan expect an “all-time high” in software sold.

Nintendo’s lineup of games in 2022 promises to deliver across various genres from team-based shooters like Splatoon 3 to JRPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles 3. More games will be announced this summer as part of a traditional Nintendo Direct in the midst of a cancelled E3.
