Opinion: The Price We Pay For Good Affordable Videogames

I hate to say it, but we live in a different world than we did 10, 20 years ago. Inflation has caused the once almighty dollar to plummet in value, and in turn, has triggered a chain reaction across multiple industries. One massive industry that is being constantly affected is the videogame industry. According to a report from theesa.com, U.S video game sales reached a record-breaking $43.4 Billion in revenue. To say the videogame industry is booming would be an understatement; yet even with so many games riddled with microtransactions, DLC, and other extra ways of monetization, games still sell like mad. I don’t like these methods as much as the next guy, but realistically, we don’t have much of a choice.

Videogames’ prices have surprisingly stayed stagnant throughout the years, running us around $60 for a new game. Back then, on consoles like Atari and NES, this was a great price tag that could circumvent the cost of developing those games. It was more than enough to make profits for companies, as these games weren’t as freakishly expensive to make as they are nowadays. Today, videogames can cost upwards of $100 Million just to develop. We are actually quite lucky that we still only pay not only $60 for new videogames but only $300-500 for a new console. Inflation has not been kind to us, and the fact we aren’t paying the statistically higher price of almost 200-300% more in value for new consoles is a blessing. So, what is the sacrifice we make to have this luxury? Well for huge blockbuster AAA titles they almost always have some form of DLC, Season Pass or Loot Boxes.

It seems like today finding a massive successful full AAA title with no additional monetization attached is rare. We do get diamonds in the rough like titles such as God of War, Uncharted 4, and The Last of Us. These games all have a plethora of accolades and are hailed as some of the greatest of this generation. But for every God of War, we have an Assassin’s Creed Unity or Mass Effect Andromeda. Games riddled with bugs, animation issues, FPS issues, and so much more. The thing is though, these amazing successful games are so rare because of how difficult it is to develop games today. There are so many problems that can occur using these massive complicated engines, or budget mismanagement losing their time, and more importantly, their money.

The fact of the matter is videogames are more complicated than ever before, and we the consumer must understand the economics of the industry. This isn’t to say we should tolerate unfinished games or soulless cash grabs with an ungodly amount of loot crates, microtransactions and Season Passes. EA is still very much at fault for their greed and business models. That entire company is for another day, another article to really dive into what exactly went wrong with them. This is just to remind the consumer that next time we go out and buy a new game for $60, cherish what we have and accept the fact it may have DLC or Season passes to compensate for the massive budget; but if they’re optional and don’t detract from the game experience, don’t fault the developers, fault the ever-increasing costs of development.

Opinion: Attack On Titan Is a Modern Anime/Manga Masterpiece

When many refer to anime classics, many are quick to bring up anime such as Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion Neon Genesis, Rurouni Kenshin, and the Original Dragon Ball. Over the past 10 years, anime has steadily been growing, evolving and emerging into an accepted cultural phenomenon across the globe. But what is one Anime that has pushed its self to mainstream gold, and proved it can forever stand the test of time with all the other glorious golden age of anime?! I believe it is Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

    What is Attack on Titan?!

Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga series both written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The Narrative takes place in a fantasy world where humanity lives within territories surrounded by three expansive walls that protect them from gigantic man-eating humanoids which are called titans. Attack on Titan currently has three seasons of anime, which equals a total of 59 episodes and has kept consistent high-quality animation, storytelling, and bone-chilling moments from episode 1 of the series. Attack on Titan has one of the most unique reimaginings of post-apocalyptic settings with beings like zombies (Titans) attacking where humans live. This series has everything from plot, narrative, to Exhilarating character designs with beautiful cinematic, and choreographed animation done by WIT Studios, & Production I.G.

The Impact of Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan has Accomplished many things early on such as had a Marvel Studio’s Collaboration Titled ‘Attack on Avengers’, a theme park attraction ride at Universal Studios Japan, and is noted to be a part of the best-selling manga series, approximating over 90 million in sales. Attack on Titan also hasn’t even finished yet and already has live adaptation films of the franchise.

    CONCLUSION

This series has impacted my life in various ways to where I can watch each episode multiple times and potentially gain another experience from it. Attack on Titan has a lot of exposition, mixed with high intense action and character relationships that just feel too realistic, even coming from an anime. Eren Jaeger, The Main character has a strong relationship with his close friends Mikasa & Armin in the series, but when these cast of characters face hardships and conflict with each other it seems like something I’ve experienced in another shape or form in my day to day life.

There are new anime series emerging today, however, none of them are reaching the level of impact attack on titan has done to mainstream media. Attack On Titan is an evolving series and as it continues to impact many communities, fandoms, and geek culture across the world it; will continue to strive for many years to come. Attack on Titan is honestly just as amazing as many classic series and is currently having the same mainstream impact, love and positive reception with many manga/anime have had in the past.

Attack on Titan is one of the few anime that I question everything on the screen but never confused about what’s going on. It makes me want to dig deeper the more I consume this franchise on a daily. Each episode/chapter is not only entertaining, but also life lesson enriched with key plot points with twists and turns. Attack on Titan Season 4 is the final series of Attack on Titan coming in autumn 2020. I couldn’t ever be more excited for the series going forward.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Season 4 details announced

    Season 4 begins July 24

The famed island of Erangel is getting an overhaul, PUBG Corp has announced. Season 4 of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is underway next week on PC and later this summer on consoles.

In a cinematic trailer posted to their respective social media sites, PUBG Corp gave us a look at what’s coming for season 4 in the popular battle royale. Notable among the changes is a complete graphical overhaul to Erangel, the map that started it all. Popular landmarks such as the Prison, Military Base, Mylta Power, and the Mansion will be showcasing what is believed to be the “aftermath” of a great war, as seen in the trailer.

Also coming to the battle royale shooter is a new turntable item. The turntable will spawn randomly throughout the map, allowing players to play music for all nearby combatants to hear. Turntables can be destroyed or turned off and will stop playing after one track. This should add a nice surprise mechanic to the game itself.

Full patch notes can be found on PUBG Corp’s website. Season 4 is on the test server now and hits PC fully next week on July 24 and consoles later this summer. Stay tuned for updates.

Someone at THQ accidentally leaked entire Darksiders 3 DLC inside the game.

Game development is an extremely difficult and tricky environment, one that is definitely not immune to human error, even some of the most hilarious ones. We have often heard of leaks and rumors, but actual unintentional leaks INSIDE a video game might be a first, if not one of the few rare cases.

User Dragonfire9000 on Reddit, reported recently a…strange event that occurred, to say the least after an update for Darksiders 3.

“So I’m not too sure how many of you are in the same boat.

I have the Season Pass for Darksiders 3 and this afternoon my Xbox just downloaded the second DLC, however I don’t think this was actually meant to happen on THQ Nordics side as the introduction cutscene seemed unfinished, there are no new achievements and the final confirming fact, when you enter the DLC, floating in mid-air is the text “start point for DLC2”.

I think someone mixed up an update and the actual DLC in an unfinished state, there no background layer textures are missing, hard-line textures are still there (the things that indicate were something should be.)

there are gaps in the scenery and it suffers from major pop in were entire chunks of the environment just appear out of mid-air.

Hopefully, someone at THQ Nordic gets wind of what happened and issues a fixed notice… soon….”

He claimed after receiving an update that literally leaked the entire second DLC in a less than unfinished state.

For context, THQ announced two main DLCs for their Legend Of Zelda / Classic God Of War inspired franchise, Darksiders 3. While the first DLC dropped recently, the second DLC, named Keepers of the Void was not supposed to release THIS early. Therefore, Reddit user Dragonfire9000 got access to a whole new area with missions, story content, and puzzles.

Darksiders III is a hack and slash action-adventure video game developed by Gunfire Games and published by THQ Nordic for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, released November the 27th, 2018 with a still rumored Nintendo Switch release.
