Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories introduces players to amnesiac alchemist Karia and her companions Servio Lektor, Fina Rozen, and fellow alchemist Yumia Liessfeldt on a quest of discovery and growth. Throughout their journey, players will also encounter additional including Noelk Schreiber, an aloof inspector from the Eustellan Bureau of Alchemical Relic Control, and Celes, a woman who appears calm and collected but has a peculiar side of her personality. Together, they endeavor to explore Aladiss’ mysterious underworld and uncover its secret.
As the story progresses, players will be able to utilize style changes which will enable Karia to awaken new powers while altering both Karia’s appearance and her fighting style, allowing players to adapt to the combat encounter they are facing. Over eight styles, including Ignis and Mermaid, will be accessible and can be unlocked throughout Karia’s journey by making progress with the main story, as well as eating meals. Ignis Style allows Karia to channel the element of fire, boosting her attack and imbuing skills with fire damage at the cost of lowering her defense and increasing her vulnerability to ice attacks. Comparatively, Mermaid Style allows Karia to use ice magic, increasing magic damage, but reducing Karia’s physical attack, making her weak to fire attacks. Once a style is unlocked, players will be able to employ them in battle by eating particular items, or during exploration, like breaking obstacles while dashing, and walking on water.
Exploration is further expanded in Atelier Karia thanks to Interactive Field Actions, enabling players to utilize items to interact with the environment, opening up new ways to explore the world. Karia can throw items to gather ingredients and destroy obstacles from a distance, as well as delivering damage to enemies. In addition, obstacles can be overcome by utilizing certain items in specific spots to activate gimmicks which respond differently depending on the element used. Players can now employ the items Flamme, Lehrune, Plajig, and Luft (fire, ice, electric, and air elements respectively) to activate gimmicks and maneuver through obstacles in unique ways. Using elemental items on certain gathering spots will also modify the ingredients that are collected due to Elemental Alteration, giving players freedom to experiment and make new discoveries.
While exploring, Karia and friends will encounter colossal enemies that will require players to coordinate between frontline and assault team phases to seize victory. During these colossal encounters, players will organize and switch between their teams, taking the enemies on directly during the Frontline Team Phase, and supporting by using structures around the map during the Assault Team Phase. By completing the objectives assigned to the frontline and assault teams, players can deplete the enemy’s morale gauge and gain the upper hand in battle. Objectives will be divided into primary and secondary objectives, with secondary objectives granting players aid from surrounding support structures, such as shelters, sonic cannons, and item launchers, as well as reducing enemy morale. Ignoring secondary objectives will benefit the enemy; therefore, players must strategize and prioritize objectives carefully to defeat the colossal foes.
In addition to battles, alchemy and synthesis also remain key components in this title as fans will enjoy a renovated synthesis system combining strategy and creativity when using the alchemy cauldron found in the depths of Aladiss. When synthesizing, players will be able to connect the mana pieces of the ingredients in a recipe map while creating patterns set by the recipe’s ingredients to unlock certain effects, which will change depending on the ingredients chosen and the way they are connected. Each ingredient can have several different piece shapes with effects, enabling players to work out which combination is the most effective. Likewise, there are multiple ways to connect ingredient pieces, which will alter the result of a recipe, or even change the item entirely if certain conditions are met.
