God of War Live-Action Series Will Recast Ryan Hurst as Kratos

The reason is due to a recent injury.

An article from Deadline has reported that the God of War live-action series will recast Kratos after previous actor Ryan Hurst sustained an injury on set. The series will now restart production in October.

During filming, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt. Recovery time is estimated at 4-6 months, while a full return to strength could take up to a year. As Deadline states, “while Hurst’s full recovery is a priority, the period required for it was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate, leading to the difficult decision to recast the role.” Currently, neither Ryan Hurst, PlayStation, or Amazon MGM have commented on the reports.

The rest of the cast includes:

  • Callum Vinson as Atreus
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severence) as Thor
  • Mandy Patinkin (Criminal MindsHomeland, The Princess Bride) as Odin
  • Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur
  • Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall
  • Teresa Parker (The Fall GuyA Discovery of Witches) as Sif
  • Alastair Duncan reprises his role as Mimir
  • Danny Woodburn (WatchmenThe Witcher) as Brok
  • Jeff Gulka (The X-Files) as Sindri

Recently, Sony Santa Monica announced God of War Laufey, the next entry in the God of War franchise. The entry focuses on Laufey, the deceased wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. While the official release date is still unknown, Santa Monica recently announced that God of War Laufey will receive a physical disc release at launch. This seemingly confirms that it will release in 2027, since all PlayStation physical disc production is currently set to end in January 2028. More details about the upcoming game will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026
