The new scenario of Danganronpa 2×2 will be “equal to or greater than” the original story of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, according to a new Famitsu interview with producer Shohei Sakakibara. The story of Danganronpa 2×2 will still connect with previous entries in the series, including Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa Zero, and Danganronpa Ultra Despair Girls.
According to Sakakibara, a remake of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc was initially considered with the same characters and worldview. However, the idea was dropped, since the story changes for a remake would have made too much of an impact on subsequent entries. Instead, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair was chosen to provide a new Danganronpa without compromising the series’ worldview.
The Danganronpa 2×2 scenario starts the same way as Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair but changes after a certain incident. It’s not a branching story, but rather a new scenario that is separate and independent of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. When asked if the story connects to Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School, Sakakibara says it depends on how 2×2 ends. Sakakibara also says fans should wait on further details regarding gameplay changes, and he hopes fans look forward to what’s next for the series.
The original cast will return to voice new lines for their characters and re-record voices. Monokuma and Monomi will receive new Japanese VAs since their original VAs passed away. In addition, characters have been redrawn, and character backgrounds have been redesigned from scratch.
As previously announced, Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka is working on Danganronpa 2×2 alongside developers from Too Kyo Games, Spike Chunsoft, and Gemdrops. Kodaka is supervising the story and providing story and trick ideas. Character designer Rui Komatsuzaki and composer Masafumi Takada also return.
Danganronpa 2×2 launches in 2026 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. A demo is planned, but further details about it were not disclosed.
