NetEase has revealed that Marvel has given the green light to create original characters for the roster of Marvel Rivals. When asked for more details, the game’s director, Guangguang, simply asked players to “stay tuned.”
During the Marvel Rivals Ignite Tournament, MP1st interviewed the director, asking “One thing about Marvel projects lately is the introduction of original characters, be that in movies or shows. Is that something that you’re even allowed to do down the road just having a completely original character for the game that may be introduced to the full Marvel universe later?” In response, Guangguang confirmed that “Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”
The closest thing Marvel Rivals currently has to an original character is Luna Snow, who didn’t originate from Marvel Comics. Rather, she debuted in Marvel Future Fight, a mobile action RPG which launched in 2015. While there is currently no official news about the next original character coming to Marvel Rivals, the game recently added Blade to its roster.
Eric Brooks, also known as Blade, is an iconic half-human, half-vampire comic book character. Many will recognize him from his appearance in the Blade films, where Wesley Snipes depicted the character. He also made an appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine. A Blade film starring Mahershala Ali has been in development since 2019.
As Season 3.5 continues, there will be new costumes, maps, and balance patches released in the coming weeks. Season 4 will begin on September 12 and will begin with the launch of an as of yet unannounced character. Lastly, Marvel Rivals is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It may release later on the Nintendo Switch 2.
