Nintendo Studios and Universal Pictures have registered a copyright for a new Donkey Kong motion picture, suggesting that this could be the next big movie project after the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel and live-action The Legend of Zelda film. The copyright was dated on June 6 and simply lists the movie as “Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture.”
Previously, Nintendo delayed the release of the new The Legend of Zelda live-action movie to May 7, 2027. The movie was previously planned to premiere on March 26, 2027, but Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that “production reasons” have delayed the premiere of The Legend of Zelda.
Wes Ball directs the upcoming The Legend of Zelda live-action movie. In the past, Ball directed The Maze Runner franchise and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie is produced by Arad Productions, known for its work on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Kraven the Hunter, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Uncharted, and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid film. Nintendo is co-financing the film with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Moreover, the next entry in the Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise will release in April 24, 2026, just one year prior. The new Super Mario Bros. animated movie from Nintendo and Illumination will be titled Super Mario World, according to NBCUniversal’s news release regarding its upcoming slate of films.
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5 for $449.99. A bundle is available for $499.99 featuring Mario Kart World. Games like Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are also available.
