Crystal Dynamics Lays Off 17 Employees

The developers say they are doing it to to ensure "the studio’s future success."

Crystal Dynamics has stated that it has laid off 17 employees. The studio released a statement explaining the reason behind the decision on their social media accounts.

Crystal Dynamics said, “This morning, Crystal Dynamics made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 17 talented team members. We did not make this decision lightly. Ultimately, this step was necessary to better align our current business needs and the studio’s future success. It is not a reflection of the dedication or ability of those affected.

We recognize how painful this outcome is for those impacted and we are supporting them with transition packages and opportunity outreach.

Crystal Dynamics remains committed to pushing the boundaries of making great games. This change does not alter our current project plans.”

Crystal Dynamics’ next projects include an unannounced Tomb Raider game and latest entry in the Perfect Dark series. Both games will release at some point in the coming years. Recently, Amazon and Crystal Dynamics also announced that a Tomb Raider series will air on Prime Video in the future. Beloved actress, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (known for Fleabag and Solo: A Star Wars Story), will produce the upcoming series.

Over the last year, several major companies have laid off hundreds, if not thousands, of workers from across their entire gaming division. Examples include Microsoft, Bungie, Embracer Group, Behaviour Interactive, Riot Games, Sega, Sony, EA, and more. It also includes Take-Two, Square Enix, Ouka Studios, Rocksteady, and Iron Galaxy. Crystal Dynamics unfortunately joins the list as more and more companies struggle to stay afloat in this turbulent industry.
