Bandai Namco Entertainment filed a new trademark for “Once Upon a KATAMARI” on February 27 in Europe, which could be indicative of an upcoming game announcement.
As spotted by Gematsu, the Once Upon a KATAMARI trademark could be the first new entry in the franchise since Touch My Katamari, which was developed for the PlayStation Vita in 2011. The most recent games in the series were “REROLL” titles that were remastered of previous games. Considering Bandai Namco’s history of trademarking titles right before announcements, this is one trademark that Katamari fans will want to take note of.
In March 2024, Bandai Namco opened the official Twitter/X account for the Katamari series, teasing that news and updates about games and merchandise will be revealed in the future. The account opened on the 20th anniversary of the original Katamari Damacy game, which released on March 18, 2004 for PlayStation 2 in Japan. A new 20th anniversary visual was released, as Bandai Namco thanked fans for their support of the series. At the time, the account’s the first few announcements included Katamari LINE sticker distribution and a limited-time sale for We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie.
The latest entry in the Katamari series is We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie, which launched on June 2, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It’s a remaster of We Love Katamari from the PlayStation 2 and a sequel to the original Katamari Damacy game, which also received a re-release titled Katamari Damacy REROLL.
