Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Earns $62 Million in Opening Weekend

The #1 movie in the US.

SEGA and Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earned an estimated total of $62 million during its opening weekend in the US, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s the current #1 movie in the US.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 screened in 3,761 theaters across the US during opening weekend, which ran from December 20 to 22. It earned an estimated $25.75 million on opening day, followed by $19.5 million on Saturday and $16.75 million on Sunday. The film’s revenue nearly doubled that of Mufasa: The Lion King.

It’s no doubt that the hype leading up to release and its success led to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 being greenlit. Currently, the sequel is planned for a 2027 release. Further details about the new film were not revealed, however.

Before Christmas arrives, fans can watch a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Christmas short video, titled “A Very Short Christmas.” The short is two minutes long and sees Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails talk to Santa Claus himself.

Sonic fans can dive into Sonic x Shadow Generations right now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Final Weapon had the opportunity to preview Sonic X Shadow Generations at Summer Game Fest 2024 Play Days, and we reviewed the full game. Released on December 12, the new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack introduced a new playable level with Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves himself.
