Toei Films has announced Butt Detective the Movie: Star and Moon, a new anime film in the Butt Detective franchise. FRUITS ZIPPER will perform the opening theme for the third film, titled “Kawaiitte Magic” (Cuteness is Magic). The movie marks the third in the franchise, with the most recent being Butt Detective the Movie: Farewell, My Lovely Partner (Butt). Butt Detective is an anime series that initially premiered on NHK International in 2018. New episodes of the anime released in 2021, alongside a new film. The series focuses on a detective with a butt for his face and his partner, a small brown dog named Brown, as they solve crimes. Toei initially announced the series’ second anime film in December 2023.
The film’s story begins when Koala, one of the series’ characters, asks the titular Butt Detective to find a missing relative. The case takes Butt Detective to Stardust Island, the site of the disappearance, and also the home of the international criminal organization Phantom Thief Academy. The Academy is headed by Phantom Thief G.
Here, the organization advances its secret conspiracy, named “the Dark Age Plan.” Butt Detective enters Stardust Island under the guise of an idol. He also joins forces with Phantom Thief U, who is out to steal back the valuable Moonlight Stone from Phantom Thief G. The story will also reveal more about Brown’s past.
Lastly, Butt Detective the Movie: Star and Moon will premiere in theaters on March 20.
