Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 22 Review – Brief and Joyful Respite

    Wholesome with a competitive undertone.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 22 is the epitome of “the calm before the storm” phrase, since tension is surely going to mount before the second stage of the First-Class Mage Exam begins. Unlike the first test, mages that were once on the same team will need to face off against each other.

The episode begins at the very end of the first stage, with Frieren, Fern, Wirbel, Edel, and Denken’s groups all passing with their Stilles in hand. With the first stage now complete, the Continental Magic Association gives the mages a few days to relax and recover in Äuberst before the second stage begins.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 22 Emphasizes Hearty Meals and Companionship

Frieren Beyond Journey's End Episode 23 Trailer

Stark sleeps into the afternoon, and Fern isn’t happy about that at all in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 22. Fern becomes pouty again, but Frieren and Stark don’t waste time making her happy again. The group decided to eat at Äuberst’s best diner, which Himmel’s group also visited nearly 80 years ago. Frieren reminsces about the diner’s head chef at the time, who prepares some of the best steak she’s ever had. Despite the gap in time, the diner’s food is still incredible, and the other mage groups are finally having a good time, too.

One of the most important scenes of the episode involves Land and Übel, since they essentially size each other up ahead of the second stage. Übel reveals that her special ability allows her to copy magic from those she empathizes with. She demonstrates by using Wirbel’s containment magic against Land, who doesn’t show much interest for Übel at all. Land definitely has some tricks up his sleeve though.

Stark meets Wirbel after spending some time with Frieren, Fern, Lawine and Kanne. The roguish mage wants Stark to join him on a monster hunting mission while the rest of the girls hang out, and it’s pretty clear the Wirbel has an eye for picking out good mercenaries. Meanwhile, Lawine and Kanne give Frieren snacks as a gift for helping them pass the first stage.

Despite how wholesome most of the episode was, the moment everyone was waiting for came at near the end of the episode. All of the mages received their notification letter regarding the second test, revealing that it will begin soon with Sense as the proctor. Lawine is not happy about the choice of proctor, since not a single mage has passed a test with Sense overseeing it.
