What Happened in Frieren Episode 21? (Recap)

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 21 began with a flashback of Frieren not wishing to learn a spell from Serie. Frieren is interested in discovering and learning each magic spell, and Flamme believes she will be a mage of the peaceful era. Serie is not interested in this sentiment, since she’s a mage that focuses on knowledge and combat first and foremost.

In the present, Frieren battles and restrains Denken and demands that Laufen hands back the Stille she stole in episode 20. Laufen is worried about Denken taking a point-black magic spell from Frieren, so she lunges toward him in order to rescue him. However, Frieren foresaw this, capturing both Laufen and Denken and retrieving the Stille. She also lends a hand to Kanne and Lawine by breaking the magic barrier around the exam area with a single powerful spell.

After a grueling battle, Lawine and Kanne are able to defeat Richter with a powerful water spell. Although Denken’s group was defeated, they were able to quickly rebound and pass the test after getting into a fistfight with a group that lost a team member. Fern and Frieren are reunited as the first test ends, with a nice three-day break to boot.

    Episode 22 Preview

Fern appears to be in an unpleasant mood in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 22 during the break between the first and second tests. The episode will also show what Denken, Laufen, and Richter are doing in their break as well.

Lastly, Crunchyroll’s overview of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End reads:

The mage Frieren defeated the Demon King alongside the hero Himmel’s party after a 10-year quest. Peace was restored to the kingdom. Because she is an elf, she is able to live over a thousand years. She promises Himmel and the others that she will be back to see them and then sets out on a journey by herself. Fifty years later, Frieren goes to visit Himmel and the others. She remained unchanged, but Himmel and the others have aged and only a little of their lives remain. Later, she witnesses Himmel’s death. Frieren is pained by her desire to have spent more time getting to know people. With that regret in her heart, she then goes on a journey to do just that. On her journey, she meets many people and many events await her.
