Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 21 Review – Teamwork Makes Magic

    The wonderful world of magic.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 21 reminds fans to never doubt Frieren and those she believes in, as herself and her friends qualify for the second test with flying colors. The episode also saw the formal debut of Mariya Ise as Serie, a great mage that Frieren and her mentor, Flamme, are well acquainted with.

The episode begins with Serie welcoming Flamme and a young Frieren to her abode. Serie is regarded as a grimoire of magic for her incredible knowledge of magic spells, and she’s willingly open to granting newcomers a single spell of their desires. However, Frieren refuses to learn a spell from Serie, as she believes the greatest joy that comes to a mage is discovering these spells themselves. Serie believes this sentiment is rather silly, but its not surprising for someone who essentially knows all magic.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Episode 21 Brings the End of the First Test

Back in the present, Richter is fighting with an severe advantage over Lawine and Kanne. Since Kanne is unable to use water during the fight, Lawine’s offensive magic isn’t as effective. On top of this, Richter is highly skilled in physical magic and able to use the ground beneath him to create massive boulders. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 21 is proving to be a showcase of Richter’s magical prowess, but his weakness becomes apparent soon enough.

Meanwhile, Frieren has no trouble fending off Denken with her own magic. The old mage is outmatched by Frieren and restrained to the ground before long. He encourages Laufen to leave the area with the Stille, since Frieren is not going to kill him. However, Laufen worries that Denken will get badly injured from Frieren’s point-blank magic spell, so she decides to dive in for a rescue attempt. This also ends poorly for Laufen, as she and Denken are both restrained to a tree by Frieren.

With Stille in hand, Frieren decides to defy magic logic once more by preparing an ultra powerful spell. This spell breaks through the magic barrier around the exam area, shocking the proctors and surprising Serie. Serie believes this is a warm welcome, as she hasn’t spoken to Frieren in over a thousand years.

Since the barrier is broken, Kanne can finally use rainwater to cast a powerful magic spell. It turns out that water is Richter’s weakness, so he’s quickly defeated once Lawine stalls him with her ice magic. Denken’s group is defeated for the moment, but they’re resourceful enough to get a Stille in a good old fist fight.

A Tease for the Second Test

Serie in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End episode 21 ends with Fern and Frieren reunited alongside the other surviving mages, such as Übel and Land, as the first test comes to a close. The second test will see mages go one-on-one to determine victors, so it’s going to be a seriously action-packed series of episodes going forward. The latest episode serves as an appetizer for what’s to come while giving Serie some of the spotlight.

Before the credits, the very end of the episode sees Stark enjoy his alone time at a nearby pub in Äuberst. Although he’s relaxing and having a nice drink, he’s definitely missing the company of Fern and Frieren. Since the mages will be taking a three-day break, we should be see Stark appear in the next episode.

New episodes of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End stream on Fridays via Crunchyroll.
