In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Hideki Kamiya lamented that he will be unable to continue his plans for the Bayonetta franchise. Although, he indicated that PlatinumGames may end up continuing the series without him.
Hideki Kamiya co-founded PlatinumGames alongside Atsushi Inaba, Shinji Mikami, and Tatsuya Minami on October 1, 2007. In September 2023, he departed the company, after having worked primarily on the Bayonetta franchise over the last decade. Despite Kamiya now having his own YouTube channel, his future as a game developer is currently unknown.
Hideki Kamiya Speaks About the Future of the Bayonetta Franchise
In a recent video, Hideki Kamiya responded to comments left by viewers of his channel. One of the comments asked about the future of the Bayonetta franchise. PlatinumGames and Kamiya released the first game in 2009. Over the years, the game has received a cult following, garnering sequels in 2014 and 2022. Recently, a spin-off was also released, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.
In the video, Kamiya stated the following:
“As I explained earlier, I worked on Bayonetta 1, 2, 3 and Origins. I’ve talked about this in various interviews, that the Bayonetta series would consist of a total of nine episodes, and that I wanted to grow the franchise as the Bayonetta ‘Saga’, but it seems like I may have to take the full saga to the grave with me. It’s a shame. It’s not like I own the Bayonetta IP, but I suppose those who do will probably keep it going.”
Although Kamiya is unable to work in the games industry for the next year, he will detail some of his plans alongside Shinji Mikami at the Archipel Caravan event, which takes place from December 15 to 17 in Tokyo.
PlatinumGames will likely reveal more details on the future of the Bayonetta franchise in the coming years. Lastly, the full series is available now for purchase on the Nintendo Switch, and the original Bayonetta game is also available on PC via Steam.
