Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Reveals New Features and Characters

Become a strong wanderer and meet new characters.

Spike Chunsoft revealed new details about Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, including new features and characters. The new roguelike RPG will be launching first in Japan before coming to the west.

Announced in the September 14 Japanese Nintendo Direct, Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is a brand-new entry in Spike Chunsoft’s long-running dungeon RPG series. The game will launch first on January 25, 2024 for Nintendo Switch in Japan with Japanese and Traditional Chinese language options. The latest details provide an extended look into what players around the world can expect next February.

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island Features

Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island includes many features, including Sumo status. During this state, Shiren gains several advantages such as boosted Attack Power, increased max HP, and the ability to nullify traps. Shiren activates Sumo status when his Fullness exceeds 150, but the status will no longer be active once it comes back down to 120 and below. Players can directly control when Shiren activates Sumo status since Fullness may be changed or increased by eating Onigiri and certain items. Shiren can’t use items to move around, however.

Mysterious gates may be found, leading Shiren to another realm filled with monsters known as Behemoths. These Behemoth Gates may open up inside the dungeon, so players must be careful since the monsters are much more powerful than normal enemies. Although Behemoths have slow movement speed, they have high Attack Power and are immune to attacks from the front or sides due to a defensive barrier.

    Sacred Items and Monster Dojo

Another one of the new features found in Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island is Sacred Items. A Sacred Item is a rare piece of equipment with random enhanced abilities. These items are available in Blue and Golden rarities. Golden items are more rare, but the item’s effect varies each time. As a result, Blue items may be more powerful and reliable. What’s more, Sacred Weapons and Shields may have rare Runes known as Natural Runes. These Natural Runes have unique effects that can’t be obtained elsewhere.

Outside of exploration, players may train in a special facility known as the Monster Dojo. In the Monster Dojo, players may simulate dungeon encounters and practice to your heart’s content before facing real encounters. Players may also freely place monsters, items, and Traps that you’ve previously encountered in dungeons.
