Spider-Man 2: Story, Gameplay, Platforms, and Release Date

Miles Morales and Peter Parker's journey continues.

One of the most anticipated games releasing in the last quarter of 2023 is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game is the long-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Set to release on October 20, it will feature several new mechanics, new villains, and much more. Here’s an overview of everything we know about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including its story, gameplay, platforms, release date, and more.

    Story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

    A new glimpse of Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 takes place eight months after the events of Miles Morales. The game builds off the last two games and focuses on Harry Osborn finally being free from his medically induced coma. In the most recent story trailer, he promises to “heal the world” alongside Peter Parker.

However, their mission grinds to a halt when Kraven the Hunter comes to New York. Kraven is one of the most beloved villains in the Spider-Man mythos, with his depiction in the new game looking faithful to the original character. Additionally, both Peter and Miles have to contend with the likes of the symbiote that bonds to Peter and slowly warps his personality.

That said, the main villain of Spider-Man 2 will undoubtedly be the fan-favorite character, Venom. The monstrous antagonist has been foreshadowed since the end of the first game when the symbiote was found attached to Harry Osborn. The very first trailer for the game showcased a preview of the character, played by horror legend Tony Todd.

Unlike in the original comics, though, Eddie Brock will not be Venom. Instead, according to creative director Bryan Intihar, the man behind the symbiote will be someone “new.” Only time will tell how Peter Parker and Miles Morales will fight against the likes of the Lizard, Kraven, Venom, and more.

    Gameplay

The gameplay of Spider-Man 2 will differ drastically from its predecessors. Each game before it featured several unique options for traversal, combat, and more. However, the newest entry in the series will up the ante more than ever before. For one, both Peter and Miles are playable. Each character has their own unique moveset, gadgets, and, of course, costumes.

Additionally, players can switch between them with just the push of a button. Some missions require you to play as either Miles or Peter, while some will allow the freedom to choose between each character. Further, there are several new mechanics that both characters share. One of these is the Web Wings, a new device that allows for more freedom as you swing and glide between buildings through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Coney Island, and more. There is also the addition of a parry. Certain enemies are undodgeable and must be countered instead.

Of course, each Spider-Man has unique abilities. For example, Peter Parker can utilize the iron-spider legs from the comics and the beloved black suit. According to early impressions, the symbiote abilities can be used on any suit; you do not have to have the specific symbiote outfit equipped. If you do, expect to see the suit evolve as it exacts its deadly will upon Peter Parker.

On the other hand, Miles Morales has access to both his unique electricity powers and the ability to turn invisible. With all the new additions, mechanics, and quality-of-life updates, Spider-Man 2 is set to be the ultimate experience for the titular heroes.
