The anime and manga world is mourning the loss of Space Adventure Cobra creator Buichi Terasawa today at age 68. Terasawa’s official X (Twitter) account confirms that the creator passed away on September 8 due to a heart attack.
Buichi Terasawa was born in 1955 in Hokkaido. At age 21, Terasawa moved to Tokyo to study under the god of manga himself, Osamu Tezuka. In 1978, he launched the Space Adventure Cobra manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, kickstarting a multiple decade-long career.
Space Adventure Cobra Creator Passes Away
The official Twitter account for Buichi Terasawa released an obituary, confirming the creator’s passing on September 8 from a heart attack. Terasawa had been facing major health issues since 1998. In 2003, Terasawa revealed that he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1998 and underwent surgery. The cancer relapsed despite having radition and chemotherapy treatment. The left side of his body was paralyzed following the second surgery.
He leaves behind an incredible legacy as an anime and manga creator with franchises such as Space Adventure Cobra, Goku – Midnight Eye, and Kabuto. Moreover, Microids and TMS Entertainment are currently working on an officially licensed Space Adventure Cobra game. The new game will release for PC and consoles in the future.

Adapted from the Japanese animation series produced by TMS Entertainment (based on illustrations and comic books created by Buichi Terasawa), the video game provides players the opportunity to step into Cobra’s shoes as the famous galactic bounty hunter, in a futuristic and colorful universe on consoles and PC.
Created in 1978, the cult manga Cobra has fascinated many generations of fans with its complex plot known for its many twists and turns. With his legendary Psycho Gun attached to his left arm, and his iconic partnership with Lady, the notorious space pirate Cobra has captivated audiences for decades.
Space Adventure Cobra is currently in pre-production for consoles and PC, and further details were not revealed. Microids is also working on a new UFO Robot Grendizer game releasing on November 14.
