Metal Gear Series Surpasses 60 Million Copies Sold

Today, Konami revealed that the iconic Metal Gear series has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. The series has seen seventeen games released over its lifetime, through eleven mainline titles and six entries on mobile or handheld devices. The series had its first release in 1987, with a sequel following suit in 1990. Both of these entries were on the MSX2. It wasn’t until 1998, when Metal Gear Solid was released that the series truly took off utilizing 3D environments under Hideo Kojima’s vision.

After Hideo Kojima’s firing, the series has not seen any activity whatsoever besides Metal Gear Survive, which fell flat on its face at release. However, this year the series returns with the iconic entries that defined it within the gaming landscape.
