SEGA Considering Sonic Reboots and Remakes

Sugino pleased with the current direction of Sonic.

SEGA is currently considering Sonic the Hedgehog reboots and remakes according to SEGA of Japan president and chief operating officer Yukio Sugino. In a new Famitsu interview, Sugino further discusses SEGA’s approach to new projects involving its intellectual properties.

Sonic Superstars is the next major release for the long-running Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and a brand-new update for Sonic Frontiers is currently in development. SEGA COO Sugino is already discussing the future of the Sonic franchise, stating that the company is considering reboots and remakes for the blue blur. SEGA develops titles with appropriate timing for each IP in efforts to determine the best possible direction for a game.

Sonic Reboots and Remakes in Discussion

“Of course, we have to do new things, but as with all IPs, we don’t have new works or reboots,” Sugino explained to Famitsu. “We will develop while selecting which is appropriate at this timing for each IP, such as ‘This is the best way to do this IP’. ‘Sonic‘ is also SEGA’s signature IP, and in parallel with the new game, we are considering reboots and remakes.”

Sugino also comments on the warm reception and strong sales performance of Sonic Frontiers in the west. SEGA and Sugino have received a lot of messages from users in North America, and the president is happy about the direction Sonic is heading after Sonic Frontiers. Moreover, Sugino is hopeful about the release of Sonic Superstars as fans experience new elements and multiplayer features.

“That in itself makes me happy, and I was also happy to receive a lot of messages, mainly from users in North America, such as ‘I’m very happy that Sonic is heading in the right direction,'” Sugino added. “When the people involved see this [Sonic Superstars] , they always say, ‘Oh!’ The gameplay also incorporates quite new elements, and you can enjoy it, including multiplayer, so stay tuned.”

Lastly, Sonic Superstars launches in fall 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
