Square Enix Staff Want to Develop Final Fantasy VI Remake

A frequent topic at Square Enix.

Square Enix staff have been wanting to develop Final Fantasy VI Remake according to a recent roundtable discussion featuring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase. Kitase has been asked multiple times by staff about when work on a potential Final Fantasy VI Remake will begin, and the producer shares his input.

According to a translation by Genki_JPN, Kitase believes the remake would be difficult to develop due to ongoing developments for the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi also chimed in and believed the remake would be difficult to develop right now. Sakaguchi states that a FF VI Remake would be harder to develop since the original was a pixel-based game. The developers would need to change the story and reimagine the game as a 3D experience rather than the original pixel-based game.

Despite the challenges that are present with a potential remake, several staff members at Square Enix ask Kitase about when work on FF VI Remake will start. Square Enix has many FF VI fans within the company itself, so this is a frequent topic of discussion. Moreover, Sakaguchi joking asks Kitase “won’t you release it a little sooner?” and the producer laughs saying “it isn’t easy.”

Kitase on Final Fantasy VI Remake

“I think Final Fantasy VI Remake would be difficult,” Kitase said during the Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary roundtable discussion. “Final Fantasy VII Remake is not yet finished, so I am not able to think about it. But there are many Final Fantasy VI fans inside the company, and they often ask me ‘when are we making VI?’.”

Finally, Square Enix is currently developing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PlayStation 5. The massive action RPG will kick off directly after the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is currently scheduled for an early 2024 launch across two discs for PlayStation 5.
