Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope Update Planned for Switch Successor

The Switch's successor looms ever closer.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently confirmed that Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope would have an update on the Switch’s inevitable successor.

Sparks of Hope was initially released on October 20, 2022. While the game was reviewed well, it didn’t reach the sales success Ubisoft hoped for. In a new Gamesindustry.biz interview, Guillemot commented on his regrets about the release and what to expect in the future.

“We had already released a Mario Rabbids game [on Switch],” Guillemot said in the interview. “So by doing another, we had two similar experiences on one machine. On Nintendo, games like this never die. There are 25 Mario games on Switch. Nintendo [has advised] that it’s better to do one iteration on each machine. We were a bit too early, we should have waited for [the next console].”

Finally, he states, “…we think it will last for ten years because we will update it for the new machine that will come in the future.”

This seemingly confirms that Ubisoft is already considering Nintendo’s next console. The follow-up to the Nintendo Switch has been theorized about for years as speculation from fans continues ahead of the upcoming Nintendo Direct. However, Nintendo’s upcoming Switch follow-up will likely build on the original infrastructure in some way. Beyond these comments, nothing else can be definitively gleaned from Guillemot’s remarks aside from Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope eventually coming to the upcoming Switch successor.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is set to get two more updates this year. Further, one is confirmed to include the beloved character Rayman, one of Ubisoft’s oldest mascots.

Lastly, Nintendo is set to hold its next official Direct on June 21, 2023. All we know for now is that the upcoming game, Pikmin 4, will appear at the event. However, it is doubtful that there will be any news about the Switch’s successor.
