Will Final Fantasy XVI Release on PlayStation 4?

    Definitely not.

PlayStation 4 players feel left out when looking at upcoming releases like Final Fantasy XVI. The sixteenth mainline installment in the long-running RPG series is currently only scheduled to release for PlayStation 5 consoles.

Considering the game will be able to enter other platforms other than PS5 after 2023 is over, is it possible we could see Final Fantasy XVI head to PS4? Here is everything you need to know about a potential PlayStation 4 release.

Is Final Fantasy XVI Going to Release on PlayStation 4?

There is close to zero chance that Final Fantasy XVI will release on PS4. Unfortunately, for those not yet upgraded to a PS5, your chances of the team deciding to backward develop for PlayStation 4 are basically impossible. This is something that just won’t happen, as the team will move on to developing for modern platforms like Xbox Series X|S or PC.

If you want to check out FFXVI, you will have to purchase a PlayStation 5 console or wait for ports to other systems in 2024 & beyond. Square Enix and PlayStation have an exclusivity agreement until December 31, 2023.

Things would be different for the PlayStation 4 if XVI had come out maybe 2 or 3 years ago. At that time, developers were constantly developing titles across both old and new generations. Now, it does not make too much sense to develop for PS4 as the hardware is slowly being aged out. PlayStation Studios have mostly stopped releasing titles for the system, with the upcoming Spider-Man 2 a PlayStation 5 exclusive despite the millions of PS4 users still active.

Will Final Fantasy XVI Come to Other Platforms?

Final Fantasy XVI will absolutely come to other platforms. The game is already confirmed to be coming to PC after the exclusivity period ends, which could be any time in 2024 or beyond. The team will most likely begin (or continue) development of this version of XVI as soon as the game launches for PlayStation 5.

Those interested in purchasing the game for PlayStation 5, whether physically or digitally, can check out the storefront from Square Enix here.
