Final Fantasy XVI will finally release on June 22, 2023. First announced in 2020, XVI is set to be the first properly new Final Fantasy game in almost a decade. However, the game was first revealed at a PlayStation Showcase. So as we get closer to the release date of FFXVI, many people wonder if the game will eventually be available on Xbox and what other consoles the game could be available on. Here’s an overview of all the consoles that Final Fantasy XVI will release on.
Will Final Fantasy XVI Release on Xbox?
Currently, Final Fantasy XVI will not release on Xbox. PlayStation 5 is the only console that the game is confirmed to release on. However, the upcoming release will be a timed exclusive for six months. In a translation of a PlayStation Blog, Game Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that the timed exclusivity doesn’t mean that the game will release on other consoles in six months on the dot. Final Fantasy VII Remake had a similar timed exclusivity deal. The game was initially released in 2020. A Steam port was released two years later, in the Summer of 2022.
However, Final Fantasy VII Remake currently doesn’t have an Xbox port. The game has been out for three years now. Currently, Square hasn’t mentioned any plans to port the game to Xbox consoles.
The last few JRPGs released by Square Enix on Xbox were Kingdom Hearts 3 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. The main reason that JRPGs tend to avoid the Xbox line of consoles is that they don’t sell as well on the console. We did an in-depth feature in late 2022 that covered the subject. But the long and short of it is that it simply isn’t profitable for companies to release their JRPGs on Xbox.
Is There a Chance the Game Could Be Released on Xbox?
Final Fantasy XVI will release on the PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. A demo is currently available now. Time will only tell if the game will eventually release on Xbox and when it will release on Steam. But considering Final Fantasy VII Remake and most other JRPGs are still unavailable for Xbox, chances are the game will never see an Xbox port.
