During a joint briefing between SEGA and Rovio, SEGA co-chief operations officer Shuji Utsumi announced Sonic Frontiers surpassed 3.5 million copies sold as of the end of April 2023. The game reached this milestone a little over a month removed from SEGA Sammy’s financial results release for fiscal year ending in March 2023.
The New Best-Selling 3D Sonic Title
Sonic Frontiers was SEGA’s top performing title in fiscal year ending in March 2023, and sales were expected even further. Now, Sonic Frontiers appears to be the best selling 3D title in the entire franchise at 3.5 million copies sold. This new sales update includes physical shipments and digital copies sold worldwide. The previous record holder was Sonic Heroes, which reached 3.41 million copies sold by 2007. Utsumi calls Sonic Frontiers “a great hit” while reiterating that the title exceeded SEGA’s original expectations according to Game Developer.
In the previous sales update, SEGA confirmed Sonic Frontiers surpassed a total of 3.2 million copies sold by the end of March 2023. Additionally, SEGA revealed the Sonic the Hedgehog series reached approximately 8.15 million copies sold from April 2022 to March 2023. A majority of sales came during the third quarter, which saw the release of the latest Sonic Frontiers in November 8, 2022.
Sonic Frontiers players may look forward to more new content in the form of two new updates later this year. The beloved Spin Dash ability will return in the second major update for Sonic Frontiers, and fans can expect a Sonic birthday celebration, new Koco, and Open Zone Challenges. The third major update will bring the new story DLC alongside new playable characters such as Knuckles and Tails. Writer Ian Flynn returns to pen the original story scenario for the new Sonic Frontiers DLC
