SEGA Reportedly Nearing a Deal to Acquire Angry Birds Developer Rovio

A potential studio being added to the SEGA umbrella.

Sega Sammy Holdings is nearing a deal to acquire Angry Birds developer Rovio Entertainment for approximately $1 billion according to a Wall Street Journal report. People close to the matter claim the deal may be sealed soon.

According to the new report, the deal between SEGA and Rovio may be sealed by as soon as April 17 if talks do not break down. This past January, Rovio was in talks with Playtika Holding Corp. for a potential worth more than $800 million, but negotiations broke down in March 2023. SEGA seemingly became a potential suitor for Rovio within the past month.

“No formal decision has been made regarding a deal. Sega continues to consider how to best enhance its corporate value,” a SEGA representative said in a statement sent to Stephen Tolito

Recently, SEGA and ATLUS’s Persona 3 remake was seemingly leaked ahead of a potential reveal later this year. Footage from a SEGA internal meeting in 2021 was leaked to the public with gameplay footage of Persona 3 remake and a potential new Jet Set Radio game. The footage was not verified, but the remake is believed to have been in development for several years.

Shortly after the Persona 3 remake leak, an official website domain (P3RE.JP) was discovered. This new domain was registered on March 15 by the same provider for the official Japanese Persona 5 Royal website.
