In the December 29 issue of Famitsu, SaGa series director Akitoshi Kawazu teased more developments for the franchise going into the 35th anniversary. As 2022 approaches its end, 2023 may prove to be a pivotal year for the series.
Square Enix’s SaGa RPG series celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2024. According to Kawazu, more developments in the SaGa series, including more remasters and entirely new projects, are coming soon. Kawazu wants to “make things exciting” for fans leading into the SaGa 35th anniversary year. He also “wants to have something new to talk about every month,” so 2023 may be an eventful year for the series as well (thanks, Ryokutya2089).
The list of SaGa games still needing the remastered treatment grows shorter by the year. Only a few SaGa games are left to be remastered including Romancing SaGa 2, 2002’s Unlimited SaGa, and the first generation of SaGa games according to Siliconera. Romancing SaGa 2 received a port in 2017 to modern platforms, however. Unlimited SaGa remains as one of the few Square Enix JRPGs stuck on the PlayStation 2.
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered, the latest release in the series, launched on December 1, 2022 for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
