Yakuza Kenzan Remake Depends on the Success of Like a Dragon: Ishin

A chance opens this upcoming February.

Gaming outlet Ungeek interviewed Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama and chief director Hiroyuki Sakamoto about the upcoming release of Like a Dragon: Ishin and potential remake implications for Yakuza Kenzan.

According to Yokoyama, a remake of Yakuza Kenzan would require extensive work since it would need to be developed from the ground up. Major overhauls would need to be made similar to the Yakuza Kiwami remakes. Additionally, there are several Like a Dragon titles in development, so time and resource constraints would hinder the project.

Success of Like a Dragon: Ishin may encourage Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio to greenlight a remake, however. According to Yokoyama, the studio has the desire to remake Kenzan. Like a Dragon: Ishin must first succeed in Japan and overseas in order to “start that conversation alone.”

“The other thing is that, to even start thinking about recreating Kenzan as a game, Like a Dragon: Ishin would have to become a huge hit on the market to start that conversation alone,” Yokoyama said.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name releases in 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Like a Dragon: Ishin releases February 21, 2023 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Lastly, Like a Dragon 8 releases in 2024.
