    Animal Crossing: New Horizons becomes Japan’s highest-selling game of all time

    Another historic milestone for Nintendo Switch.

    Over two years after launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons achieves another major milestone as the new highest-selling game of all time in Japan.

    According to Game Data Library, the largest Japanese game sales online database, Animal Crossing: New Horizons dethroned Pokémon Red / Green / Blue to become the best-selling game of all time in the country. The newly-crowned bestseller sold 10,450,000 copies in Japan whereas Pokémon Red / Green / Blue sold a combined total of 10,230,000 copies.

    Nintendo’s second quarter earnings release for fiscal year ending March 2023 also reveals that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 40.17 million copies since launch. The latest Animal Crossing game is eight million away from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the current best-selling first-party Nintendo Switch game of all time. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 48.41 million copies as of September 30, 2022. In Japan, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold roughly 6.6 million copies to date.

    Nintendo Switch reached 114.33 million units sold as of September 30. 917.59 million software units have been sold since launch. Roughly 3.25 million Nintendo Switch units and 64 million software units were sold during the second quarter. Nintendo’s third quarter earnings release should arrive within February 2023.
