The latest issue of Gameinformer includes a ton of new information regarding Pokemon Sword and Shield. One of the most compelling facts about Pokemon Sword and Shield are the new gyms. There will be 18 gyms in the game, including minor and major leagues. Each gym should be dedicated to one Pokemon type like always. In addition, gyms may vary with each version of Sword and Shield. Here’s the excerpt from Gameinformer by Sword and Shield director Shigeru Ohmori:
“There are 18 different types of gyms in the story, and depending on the version, which gyms are in the minor league and which gyms are in the major league are different. For example, in Sword, the fighting-type gym will be in the major league, but in Shield, the ghost-type. The idea is that every year, the Galar region is playing and which gyms make it into the minor league versus the major league changes.”

*Update* The Pokemon Company has clarified a mistake made by Gameinformer. Pokemon Sword and Shield will not have 18 gyms in each version but instead have a similar number of gyms like previous Pokemon games. Gyms will be different in each version.
Serebii Note: @GameInformer has since been contacted by The Pokémon Company regarding the "18 Gyms" to be corrected that the gyms will be of a similar number to prior games but different between versions. https://t.co/gDbXkHSvkT
