Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia has announced that a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Console Language: Japanese Only) will launch on November 19 in Japan for 55,000 yen (tax included). Pre-orders will open at PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan on October 20, and like other Japan-only PS5 consoles, the Digital Edition Midnight Black console is locked to Japanese for PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan.
What’s more, a standalone disc drive for the PS5 Midnight Black Digital Edition will be available separately for 11,980 yen (tax included). Although the disc drive allows Japanese players to enjoy physical games, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia reiterated it’s still ending all physical disc production in January 2028.
All future PS5 games released after January 2028 on PlayStation consoles will release exclusively in digital format. In addition, services for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita storefronts will end by 2027.
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll previously announced that a dedicated Crunchyroll hub will be added to the PS5 home screen in spring 2027. The Crunchyroll hub aims to streamline the anime watching and browsing experience for PS5 users, along with allowing them to easily find anime-inspired games.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently launched Live TV on PS5, a free ad-supported app with live programming from Sony Pictures Television for PS5. Gamers in the U.S. will have access to more than 100 live channels, including news, sports, movies, shows, anime, and more, from the Media section of the PS5 console’s user interface.
