Minecraft’s Super Duper Pack has been scrapped

You might remember the big reveal at E3 in 2017 about the big graphics upgrade for Minecraft, labeled the Super Duper Pack, where we would experience beautiful Minecraft worlds in 4K.  Well it appears the project has officially been scrapped.

According to a blog post from Mojang, they had this to say:

Some of you might remember us announcing the Super Duper Graphics Pack during E3 2017. Super Duper was an ambitious initiative that brought a new look to Minecraft but, unfortunately, the pack proved too technically demanding to implement as planned.

We realise this is disappointing to some of you – there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper from inside and outside the studio – but unfortunately, we aren’t happy with how the pack performed across devices. For this reason, we’re stopping development on the pack, and looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look.

Minecraft is available on a wide range of platforms, and we’re constantly trying to make the most of the technical architecture of each one. We’ll be able to share more on that subject very soon.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for not following through on our plans!

Pixel art platformer REZ PLZ releasing on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2020

REZ PLZ is getting a release on Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch in 2020 in addition to its previous release on PC, MAC, and Linux.

If you’re attending Gamescom this year, you can head over to the Graffiti Games booth and try out the game yourself.

REZ PLZ is a pixel art puzzle platformer where one-to-two players control two wizard brothers, Arcan and Zeph, who possess the power of resurrection. While traversing through platforming challenges and solving puzzles, players will encounter dangerous monsters and traps that require them to KILL one of the wizard brothers to advance. But thanks to a magical scroll, the brothers are able to resurrect each other from a multitude of one-hit deaths, ranging from being sliced in half, eaten by creatures, burned alive and more. As players progress, they will unlock new spells that grant them abilities to conquer the increasingly difficult challenges ahead.

Some of the key features in REZ PLZ are:

  • Co-op Play – Band together with your “brother” to take on REZ PLZ’s challenges, and remember that teamwork is key.
  • Dastardly Puzzle-Solving – Use magical abilities to solve difficult puzzles, but sometimes death is the only solution.
  • Death Around Every Corner – Death is everywhere in REZ PLZ, and can come from being eaten by monsters, sliced in half by guards, smashed by boulders and more.
  • Five Unique Biomes in a Pixel Art World – Conquer beautifully rendered pixel art biomes, each with its own unique challenges and monsters.
  • Unlockables – Explore and find a bevy of unlockable cosmetic items and unlockable gauntlet levels to customize your gameplay.
  • Bonus Modes – Challenge yourself further with bonus modes such as PVP foot race.

System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition announced for PC

Today marks the 20th anniversary of System Shock 2’s release date. In honor of that, Nightdive Studios has announced a new Enhanced Edition for PC. It’s currently in development and will likely be out sometime in 2020 before the remake of the first game.

System Shock 2 holds a special place in my heart and is one of the best PC games I’ve ever played. Shodan was such an integral part of that and it seems like this new release will help further cement that.

EA has trademarked “Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville”

In Europe, EA has trademarked “Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville”. Electronic Arts confirmed last month that the next Plants vs. Zombies shooter was entering a Closed Alpha. The game was referred to as “Codename Picnic” in the email for Alpha testers.

So, it seems that “Codename Picnic” or Garden Warfare 3 is officially called Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. You can take a look at the official filing here.

We should expect an announcement or trailer sometime relatively soon, as it seems everything is finally coming together.

Falcom currently in talks to bring upcoming ‘Ys IX’ to the Nintendo Switch.

Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo recently shared with the website Dualshocker that the studio is currently trying to find a publisher for a possible Switch port of their upcoming action-JRPG, Ys IX. He stated:

“We have talks in progress with multiple publishers regarding possible Switch games, but I can’t tell you anything precise yet or if it will happen or not.”

Rather encouraging knowing the massive success most JRPGs are meeting on Nintendo‘s latest console. It is important to note that when asked last year about the same question, Toshihiro replied:

“That will depend on the success of Ys VIII. So far, in Japan, we’ve mainly been launching our games on PlayStation systems and things are going well. So, rather than switching, we’d like to have more balance.”

When asked again last month, he gave a different version:

“Switch is an incredible platform we like, but the truth is that we don’t have the knowhow to really develop for Switch.

Plus we’re, fairly convinced that our main user base is actually located on the PlayStation platform. That said, you know, thanks to working with Nippon Ichi Software in Japan and then NIS America over here, we were able to bring one of our games to Switch and obviously we want to grow the brands as much as we can and put it out as much as we can. So in the future, if we have the opportunity to have our games ported by other other companies to Nintendo Switch, it’s something we would definitely be happy to pursue.

And as a gamer myself, as an aside, I personally love the Switch. In Japan when this question comes up, it always, we get this weird thing where it’s like “Falcom doesn’t want to work on Switch,” or “Falcom doesn’t like Switch,” or something. And that’s not… The plain and simple truth of it all is that we just don’t have the knowhow and the ability to be able to work on Switch games right now.”

Seems like we’ve come a long way, everytime the man is being asked, he gives a different answer, possibly meaning that their previous Switch port, Ys VIII probably did pretty well and they simply cannot ignore the system anymore. In any case don’t expect Ys IX to release the same day on the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch, stay tuned for possible updates.
