TV Tokyo and Plott have announced through a new website that they will be streaming Mecha Samurai on YouTube. The character designs were drafted by Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei, and the anime will air next spring, with vertical shorts starting to come out on November 2.
The studios released a teaser trailer, available here:
The cast announced thus far consists of:
- Kentarō Mashiro as Chiaki Kuzumi
- Riona Yamashita as Sana Fujimiya
- Ayumu Mizukami as Kiyoharu Obana
- Masaaki Mizunaka as an Unrevealed Character
Studio TO2KYO2 is in charge of visual design. The series’ social media accounts, including YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, will stream vertical shorts from November 2. The first pre-season episode will stream on YouTube on November 20. The main series will stream in spring next year. This will be TV Tokyo’s first anime production that is based on streaming and social media distribution.
The anime takes place in present-day Japan. It features mechanical ghosts that appear from another dimension to attack and threaten humans. The protagonist is a young man named Chiaki Kuzumi, who fights as a samurai and battles the ghosts, or “Yōkai,” with a katana imbued with the very power of said ghosts. It is described as a “unorthodox samurai action” series.
Takei’s other series, the aforementioned Shaman King, is published in English by Kodansha. It provides this overview of the series:
Shamans possess mysterious powers that allow them to commune with gods, spirits, and even the dead…and Manta Oyamada’s about to learn all about them, because his class just welcomed a new transfer student: Yoh Asakura, a boy from way off in Izumo…and a shaman in training!
