NicoNico App for Switch is Shutting Down

Users can look back at milestones and earn an achievement before the app shuts down.

Published:

Kadokawa and Dwango will be shutting down the Nintendo Switch version of the NicoNico app on March 31, 2027. The NicoNico Switch app will be delisted from the Nintendo eShop on February 28, 2027, and there’s no word of a Switch 2 version of the app.

NicoNico users will still be available to use their same accounts and access their lists on the browser version. Before the app shuts down, Kadokawa and Dwango are hosting a campaign with the app for users who have watched NicoNico on the app from its launch on July 13, 2017 to February 28, 2027. Users will receive a notification that contains milestones of their activity, including the first day they posted a comment or how many times a video was added to My List, along with an achievement.

Similarly, the Crunchyroll app on Nintendo Switch is being discontinued on October 30. Crunchyroll has yet to release a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the app. According to Crunchyroll, Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t support “several video-on-demand services,” which means the service cannot run on the platform at the moment. Crunchyroll doesn’t have any announcements to make regarding a potential Nintendo Switch 2 app.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll will add a dedicated Crunchyroll hub to the PlayStation 5 home screen in spring 2027. The Crunchyroll hub aims to streamline the anime watching and browsing experience for PS5 users, along with allowing them to easily find anime-inspired games.
