Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced the formation of the new Crunchyroll Storyworks division, which will focus on anime and live-action adaptations, during its inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum in New York City. Specifically, according to Deadline, it will adapt “global stories into anime and Japanese anime into live action.”
Sony’s Tohru Iokibe will lead the division, and he will report directly to Crunchyroll Chief Content Officer Asa Suehira. Suehira states that it will “build a creative bridge between Japan and storytellers around the world.” Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Ravi Ahuja further states that “we have a responsibility to protect and amplify what makes it special while always keeping creators’ visions at the center. That’s the goal of Storyworks.” Currently, no projects have been announced by Crunchyroll Storyworks.
Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll announced that a dedicated Crunchyroll hub will be added to the PlayStation 5 home screen in spring 2027. The Crunchyroll hub aims to streamline the anime watching and browsing experience for PS5 users, along with allowing them to easily find anime-inspired games. “From Crunchyroll membership on PlayStation, to the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime series,” said Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini in a press release. “Today, we take that partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment one step further with an anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they already are.”
Crunchyroll also announced an expansion of Crunchyroll Manga at the aforementioned forum. Crunchyroll Manga is now available in select English-speaking international markets, including United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
