Untitled Illumination/Nintendo Event Film Dated for April 12, 2028

Is it Donkey Kong? Luigi's Mansion? A new Mario movie?

Published:

According to an internal document from Universal Pictures, an “Untitled Illumination/Nintendo Event Film” will release on April 12, 2028. Currently, neither Universal or Nintendo have confirmed further details about the upcoming movie.

Over the last few weeks and months, there have been several rumors about Nintendo’s next film with Illumination. It’s possible that it could be a Luigi’s Mansion or Donkey Kong spin-off film. Further, after the success of the recent Super Mario Galaxy Movie and its focus on Fox McCloud as a character, Glen Powell may reprise his role as the character in a dedicated film. It may even be the next entry in the Super Mario movie franchise. Both Nintendo and Universal will likely reveal more details about the film at a later date.

Recently, a report from The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has passed $628 million in worldwide revenue. As such, it has more than quintupled its original budget of $110 million. So far, it has made $308.1 million in North America specifically as of April 13. It initially opened to a revenue of $34 million dollars after just one day. Additionally, it had the best opening day of any film in 2026 so far and the best of any April Wednesday in cinema history. While neither Nintendo or Illumination have officially confirmed a sequel, considering its success and the after credits of the film, it’s highly likely it is in early development.

Lastly, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie released in theaters on April 1, and is still available to watch in most cinemas today. It will likely release on digital formats soon.
