In a recent interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that development of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, will not affect or lower the game’s overall quality. Square Enix is developing the game with high-end PCs in mind first.

Hamaguchi specifically states that “our decision to go multiplatform with the FFVII Remake series will not in any way lower the quality of the third installment,” in spite of the worries of many to the contrary. Square will optimize the game down from PC to other platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Hamaguchi also confirms that the game is in the final stretch of development, and that more details will be available soon.

“Both the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox versions have been incredibly well received and generated a lot of buzz online, and that attention has also made me realize how many people are worried about this issue. However, our decision to go multiplatform with the FFVII Remake series will not in any way lower the quality of the third installment. Our development structure simply doesn’t work that way to begin with. …I suppose I’ll just have to keep saying it (laughs).”

Recently, he revealed that Square Enix plans to “share more updates on the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Project than ever before.” The news came directly after the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, which will launch on June 3, 2026. The third and unannounced title in the Final Fantasy VII remake project is likely set to be revealed soon, based on rumors and Hamaguchi’s message. The first two games launched exclusively for PlayStation 5, but it is unclear at this time if that will remain the case for the third game with this new multiplatform approach.

In January, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade released on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, our 2024 Game of the Year, will release in June for Switch 2 and Xbox. The new version’s streamlined progression feature will be available in a later update for the PlayStation 5 and PC versions.
