Cooking is a recurring feature in the Trails series, and that’s no different in The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon, the franchise’s latest entry. Soul Chef books are required to unlock new recipes in Trails beyond the Horizon, and fortunately, Final Weapon has all the information you need in this guide in order to follow along and find every recipe throughout this enormous RPG.
Like previous entries, recipes in Trails beyond the Horizon can be used to cook characters’ favorite meals, which offer HP recovery, stat boosts, and other benefits in combat. In addition, consuming the meals along with all the other food found throughout the game nets you Gourmet Points, which increases the Gourmet Rank and grants permanent party-wide stat boosts. As a result, having a high Gourmet Rank is quite helpful for end-game content.
Recipes are unlocked by reading Soul Chef books, which can be found at various shop vendors throughout Trails beyond the Horizon. Once acquired, you simply need to use the book in the Item menu to unlock the recipe, which can then be found in the Gourmet section of the Notebook menu. At the start of the game, Van has the Persnickety Pancakes recipe, so you won’t find a Soul Chef book for this one.

There’s no specific in-game achievement tied to finding all the Soul Chef books and cooking all the recipes. However, consuming the freshly cooked meals counts toward the “Dishes Sampled” achievements. Dishes from shops also count toward the completion of these achievements, and consuming all 191 Dishes in the game awards the Platinum Dish accessory from the EX: All Dishes Sampled achievement. To unlock this achievement, it’s vital that you check every single shop, especially those where the shop icons are labeled red with the “New” indicator.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon is available now for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The Story Demo for Trails beyond the Horizon is available now on all platforms with save data transfers to the full game. A Battle Demo is also available, exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
