According to IGN, EA has canceled the upcoming Black Panther game and closed down its developers, Cliffhanger Games. This marks another set of layoffs from EA this year.
EA initially announced the Black Panther game in 2023 and described it as “an original, third-person, single-player” game that “empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther.” Cliffhanger Games was a Seattle-based company made up of several talents from the industry.
It was led by Kevin Stevens of Monolith Productions, the studio features developers from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, and more. While the Black Panther game is cancelled, EA is working to find other roles for the laid off individuals within the company. That said, it has not yet confirmed the status of its other Marvel game, Iron Man.
Recently, EA laid off approximately 400 employees across its entire gaming division and canceled multiple games. Respawn, one of the affected game studios, has lost 100 employees. According to Respawn, EA had cancelled two games that it was working on which were in early development. One of these cancellations was reportedly of a Titanfall extraction shooter, similar to the likes of Escape from Tarkov and the upcoming Marathon.
Recently, Respawn Entertainment confirmed that it is developing the final chapter of the Star Wars Jedi series. The previously confirmed third entry will mark the end of the franchise and Cal Kestis’ story. EA will likely confirm more details about the final chapter of the Star Wars Jedi franchise soon. EA’s latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
